Production Description
1. Feature
- The double end structure is easy to install, and the balanced seal with the same structure is used on the medium side and the atmosphere side
- The multi spring structure ensures uniform force distribution on the sealing end face, good axial compensation performance, and no contact between the spring and the medium, making it suitable for various corrosive media
2. Material
We can provide materials not mentioned above to meet the requirements of different occasions. If needed, please contact Asino company
3. Aplications
Oil and gas, chemical, metallurgical, pharmaceutical, food, water treatment
4. Background
Why do double acting seal have stricter requirements for the displacement of pump shafts (or agitator shafts)?
Simply put, a single end face seal only manages the tracking ability of one floating ring (stationary ring), while a double acting seal must manage two floating rings simultaneously, and the axial space between them is fixed.
Below is a detailed explanation from the perspectives of mechanics and kinematics:
a. Differences in core structure result in extremely narrow"compression window"
Single end face seal: There is only one sealing end face. When the shaft moves, the compensating ring (usually a stationary ring) follows the axial displacement of the shaft through the frictional force of the spring and auxiliary sealing ring.
Double end face seal: There are two sealing end faces (the inner seal faces the medium, and the outer seal faces the atmosphere).
b. Additional wear on the auxiliary sealing ring (O-ring)
In addition to the sealing end face itself, double acting seal are also sensitive to runout because their auxiliary sealing rings are usually designed on the shaft (dynamic O-ring).
Problem: When the shaft frequently or significantly moves axially, the O-ring of the moving ring will perform reciprocating motion on the surface of the shaft sleeve.
Wear: Friction between the O-ring and the shaft sleeve causes wear, hardening, or twisting of the O-ring.
Leakage: After the O-ring fails, the isolation fluid will leak along the shaft sleeve to the inside or outside of the sealing chamber.
Stuck: Rubber debris generated by wear may block the spring hole or seal gap.
Comparison: O-rings with single end face seals usually only have radial floating and small axial displacement, so the wear problem is not obvious.
c. Disrupting hydraulic balance (balanced seal)
The vast majority of double acting seal are balanced seals, and their design relies on precise axial force balance.
Principle: By changing the diameter of the step, the closing force generated by the medium pressure on the sealing end face is smaller than the opening force.
The impact of displacement: Axial displacement will change the contact state of the sealing surface and the thickness of the liquid film. When the amount of play is too large, it can disrupt this precise balance design.
d. Practical suggestions
If you encounter frequent early failure of the double acting seal, and after excluding installation and quality issues:
Firstly, measure the axial displacement
Check the thrust bearing
Consider shoulder design
adjustment plan
e. Summary
In short, a double acting seal is like a"double-sided tape", both sides must be tightly adhered, and any slight separation of one side will cause the entire system to fail. Therefore, it puts forward an order of magnitude higher requirement for the"stability"of the shaft (i.e. axial movement) than a single end face seal.
