The design of mechanical seals and their auxiliary systems is a complex process and a system engineering, especially for high-parameter (high temperature, high pressure, high speed) mechanical seals. The design process is generally based on the analysis of known conditions, according to the determined design calculation principles (usually leakage and fluid film stiffness are chosen as the design principles), and using CAD technology to complete the modern design of the mechanical seal. 

At present, the design methods of dry gas mechanical seals abroad have become more and more mature, while the performance prediction and design theory and method of wet mechanical face seals, especially liquid lubricated mechanical seals, suffer more difficultities to study due to the coupling and decoupling of many factors such as cavitation, phase transition, viscosity changes with temperature and pressure, and thermal deformation ect.
