Working principle of mechanical sealing gas film sealing

The composition of the air film seal is the same as that of the ordinary contact mechanical seal. The main difference is that the former uses the fluid dynamic and static pressure effect created by the hydrodynamic spiral grooves on the end face in the rotating state, so that both ends of the sealed surface separated by a stable thin air film are in a non-contact state. The working principle is that when the moving ring rotates, the sealed gas is sucked into the spiral groove along the circumferential direction, from the outer diameter to the center, and the radial component flows towards the sealing channel, and the sealing weir prevents the gas from flowing to the center, so that the gas is compressed to increase the pressure. The gap between the sealing end faces is dynamically stabilized and an air film with a certain thickness is formed. The balance gap (film thickness) of the mechanical seal end face is generally between 2-103 microns. In this way, the gap between the end faces of the mechanical seal can control the balance between the interface opening force and the external closing force, so that the air film has good elasticity (high air film stiffness), forming stable operation and preventing the sealing end faces of the mechanical seal from contacting each other.

During normal operation, the closing force and opening force (air film force) of the seal are in balance (under ideal design conditions).When the sealing gap is reduced due to external interference, the gas film pressure on the end face of the mechanical seal rises rapidly, and the effectiveness of the spiral groove opening gap increases, making the opening force greater than the closing force, forcing the end face to return to its original state; on the contrary, when the external interference increases, the pressure of the air film in the gap drops, so that the opening force is smaller than the closing force, and the gap on the sealing surface decreases and returns to its original state.It can be seen that the gap recovery mechanism of the air film seal ensures that the compensation ring under the action of the spring can follow the axial displacement, angular displacement or deflection of the non-compensation ring well.

In the air film seal, to ensure that the sealing end face has sufficient opening force and air film stiffness, the air film seal must increase the hydrodynamic pressure effect on the basis of the hydrostatic pressure effect, and the hydrodynamic pressure effect is increased by processing the fluid on the sealing end faces of the mechanical seal. At the same time, the fluid dynamic pressure groove has the function of providing and controlling the hydrostatic pressure effect and the dynamic pressure effect of the gas film. Therefore, the gas film seal is considered to be a hybrid seal with both static pressure effect and dynamic pressure effect.
