Background Knowledge: Application of acoustic emission technology in monitoring of mechanical seal end faces' contact conditions
During the operation of the mechanical seal, there will be a lot of effective information that can reflect the operating state of the seal, such as vibration, temperature, pressure and sound waves, but these signals are not quite useful when used to characterize the friction state of the end faces and the thickness of the liquid film during the operation of the mechanical seal. In the contrast,the Acoustic Emission (AE) signal generated by the mechanical seal during operation contains rich working condition information. The amplitude of the acoustic emission signal has a great relationship with the state of the rotary face and the stationary seat, mainly because the former is directly related to the energy released when the latter are rubbed. While the imbalance, misalignment or other status information of the mechanical seal system will not be reflected in the acoustic emission signal before friction of rotary face and stationary seat occurs.Therefore, we can use the acoustic emission technology to monitor the friction states of the rotary face and the stationary seat during operation of the mechanical seal, and faults can thus be diagnosed.
At present, acoustic emission technology has been successfully applied to the condition monitoring of mechanical seals both at home and abroad.
