4. Background

The application and maintenance of cartridge-type container seals can be summarized as follows: they are widely applicable, and the key to their maintenance lies in ensuring"proper installation in one go". After operation, attention should be paid to the auxiliary systems and abnormal leakage.
 

a. Maintenance points: Emphasize"prevention"rather than"repair". The design life of the cartridge seal is relatively long, and almost no maintenance is required on a daily basis. Proper use and maintenance strategies can greatly extend its lifespan.
 

b. Installation: A Crucial Step for Success Preparation: It is essential to clean the surface of the shaft or shaft sleeve, remove all rust and burrs, and ensure that the surface finish of the shaft meets the required standard (at least Ra 63 microinches is recommended) to avoid damaging the seals.
 

c. The secret of the positioning clip: Before installation, the positioning clip (or centering device) on the seal must not be removed. It ensures the correct position of the sealing end face during installation. It can only be removed after the seal is fully fixed to the equipment through the gland bolts.
 

d. Tightening sequence: First, tighten the gland bolts evenly according to the specified torque, and then lock the drive screws on the shaft sleeve. The wrong sequence may cause deformation of the seals.
 

e. Operation and Monitoring: Emphasis on"Observation"Rather Than"Action"Regularly Check for Leaks: During normal operation, the seal should exhibit no visible leakage. Once a leak is detected, the cause should be promptly investigated. Possible sources include wear on the sealing end face, damage to the O-ring, failure of the spring, or changes in operating conditions (such as evacuation or increased vibration).
 

f. Maintenance of auxiliary systems: This is the most easily overlooked maintenance point. If the seal is equipped with a flushing, quenching, or barrier fluid system (such as API Plan 53), the level and quality of the buffer/barrier fluid need to be regularly checked and replaced during scheduled downtime. After the seal fails, the entire auxiliary system piping needs to be thoroughly cleaned.
 

g. Special Situations: Split Seal: For large equipment (such as large end suction pumps), if replacing traditional cartridge seals requires dismantling the pump body (which takes 8-10 hours), a cartridge split seal can be considered. It can be quickly installed without dismantling the equipment, and maintenance time can be reduced to 1-2 hours, greatly saving time and labor costs.
