4.Background

Why are single spring seals prone to"lag"or"jamming"under low-speed and frequent start stop conditions
Specifically, it can be understood from the following four core mechanisms:
a. The"mass stiffness"characteristic of the single spring seal itself leads to inertia hysteresis

b. Obstacles to the"static friction dynamic friction"conversion of the dynamic ring auxiliary sealing ring
Shutdown state: The sealing ring is in a static compression state, forming static friction with the mating surface, and the static friction coefficient is much greater than the dynamic friction coefficient.
Low speed start: The axial thrust provided by the single spring seal needs to overcome this static friction before pushing the moving ring. However, due to the low stiffness of the single spring seal and slow increase in thrust, there may be insufficient thrust, resulting in the dynamic ring being stuck in place and unable to establish a timely fit on the sealing surface.
Stuck moment: When the dynamic pressure effect caused by medium pressure or speed suddenly breaks through static friction, the dynamic ring will"jump"forward, which may cause end face impact or eccentric wear.

c. The"gap filling"effect of impurities or crystals on the medium side
Frequent start stop provides more deposition opportunities for particles, crystals, or polymers in the medium.

d. Sudden changes in lubrication and cooling states
At low speed/start stop: The fluid dynamic pressure effect between the end faces is extremely weak, mainly relying on boundary lubrication or even dry friction. Friction heat concentration leads to instantaneous high temperature of the end face micro convex body, which may result in small adhesion or material transfer.
Thermal impact: Local high temperatures can cause the sealing ring material to soften, expand, or adhere, further increasing the resistance of the moving ring. At the same time, the long heat transfer path of the single spring seal makes it difficult to quickly remove the heat from the end face, exacerbating the above process.
