4. Background

Double acting seal usually require flushing during operation. The main purpose of flushing is to maintain the cleanliness of the sealing surface, remove the heat generated by friction, prevent damage to the seal due to high temperature, and also remove impurities between the sealing surfaces to improve sealing performance.
 

a. There are various flushing schemes for double acting seal, including self flushing scheme, external flushing scheme, circulating flushing scheme, and reverse flushing scheme. The self flushing scheme uses the medium transported by the pump itself to flush the seal, with a simple structure and low cost, but may be affected by particle impurities and unstable pressure and flow rates in the medium.
 

b. The external flushing solution provides flushing liquid to the sealed chamber through an external flushing liquid source, which allows for the selection of more suitable flushing liquid without being limited by the pump delivery medium. However, it requires additional flushing liquid sources and pipeline systems, increasing the complexity and cost of the equipment.
 

c. The circulation flushing scheme combines the characteristics of self flushing and external flushing, using the medium in the sealed chamber to flush through a circulation system. It can not only use the pump's own medium, but also ensure the cleanliness and suitable temperature of the flushing medium. The reverse flushing scheme injects flushing solution from the other side of the sealed chamber in the opposite direction to the flow direction of the medium, which can better prevent particles and impurities in the medium from entering the sealing surface and improve the reliability of the seal.
 

In summary, double acting seal usually require flushing during operation to ensure their normal operation and extend their service life. The specific flushing plan of double acting seal needs to be selected based on the specific working conditions and requirements.
