The composition of the air film seal is the same as that of the ordinary contact type mechanical seal. The main difference is that the former uses the hydrodynamic pressure spiral groove opened on the end face, and the hydrodynamic and static pressure effects generated in the rotating state make the two ends of the seal separated by a stable thin gas film & operat in a non-contact state.The working principle is that when the moving ring rotates, the sealed gas is sucked into the spiral groove in the circumferential direction, from the outer diameter to the center, and the sealing weir prevents the gas from flowing to the center, so that the gas is compressed to increase the pressure, and an air film of a certain thickness is formed and the sealing end face gap is dynamically stabilized .
The balance gap (film thickness) of the mechanical seal end face is generally between 2-103 microns.
