Mechanical seal failure analysis: graphite ring end face deformation and leakage

Fault phenomenon
The outer edge of the graphite ring (narrower ring) is higher (upper opening), and the end face gap is trumpet-shaped; or: the inner edge (lower opening) of the graphite ring is higher, the friction marks are discontinuous, or partially contacted, and sometimes a large semicircle (commonly known as horseshoe shape) appears, causing mechanical seal leakage.

Cause Analysis
The main reasons for end face deformation are one or several of the following:mechanical deformation, temperature deformation, stress deformation, wrong selection of processing technology, heat treatment misconduct, etc. Especially in the high-temperature hot oil pump, if the auxiliary system is not properly selected, the sealing chamber cannot dissipate heat, resulting in excessively high temperature of the sealing chamber and deformation of the sealing ring; Another reason is the operation problem:if the replacement time of the sealing warm pump is too short and the heating speed is too fast, it is easy to cause thermal deformation of the sealing ring of the mechanical seal.

Solutions
1.Select the appropriate sealing ring materials for the corresponding medium working conditions; for the inlaid structure of the mechanical seal, choose the high-quality inlaid material to increase the natural aging time of the materials, and fully release the internal stress of the materials.

2.When using the inlaid structure, the inlaid end face can be made of a higher strength cemented carbide surface, so that the mechanical seal can resist much more deformation.

3.Under the premise that the working conditions allow, the ring seat and the ring piece should be made of materials with a as small as possible difference in linear expansion coefficients, so that the interference between the ring seat and the ring piece can be small (not only to ensure that the torque can be transmitted, but to ensure that no excessive extrusion stress on the ring will be caused  which leads to deformation of the mechanical seal if happens).

4.The stationary seat is manufactured as a whole, which can basically eliminate stress deformation.

5.Improve the equipment and installation accuracy, so that the sealing ring is evenly stressed, which will reduce the deformation of the sealing end face of the mechanical seal.

6.When the mechanical seal is started, select the appropriate sealing auxiliary system, and adopt effective heat dissipation, cooling and flushing methods to reduce the temperature of the sealing cavity so as to reduce the thermal deformation of the end face caused by temperature.
