The operation test of the mechanical seals can be divided into two categories: field test and simulated working condition test according to test conditions. The advantage of field test is that it conforms to the actual situation. It can verify the performance indicators of the mechanical seal under the design conditions, especially the service life. However, it lacks flexibility and systematicness, and affected by process conditions such as on-site installation and maintenance and host operation, the integrity of the test data is not easy to guarantee. Moreover, all the parameters specified in the type test cannot be verified on one device at the same time. For mechanical seals with higher sealing parameters,direct field trials are also more risky. However, it is impossible for the simulation test to fully meet the working conditions, and from the perspective of manpower and cost, it is impossible to carry out the test and assessment for a long time. Usually, the simulated test conditions simulate the basic working parameters of the mechanical seal, including the size of the installed sealing shaft, the pressure of the sealing fluid, the temperature of the sealing fluid, the rotational speed of the sealing shaft, etc. As for the sealing fluid, it depends on the situation.

Generally, the factory operation test time of the mechanical seal (continuous operation)is 5h , and the leakage condition of the seal should be observed to be ≤3~5mL/h. If the operation test asks for continuous operation for 100h, and the leakage of the mechanical seal (≤3~5mL/h) and the wear of the softer friction pair are observed, and the wear amount should be less than or equal to 0.02mm.
The working conditions of the mechanical seal used for automobile engine cooling water pump simulation: the type running test is divided into dynamic test (no leakage for 5h), dry and wet alternating test (wet operation and dry operation alternately 12 times for a total of 1h. Average leakage ≤ 0.03mL /h,) alternating heat and cold test (23°C—140°C—23°C—40°C for each 1h cycle for a total of 80h, air tightness inspection leakage ≤3.5mL/min), durability test (500h, leakage ≤ 1mL/h), overspeed operation test (speed pulsation cycle, leakage ≤ 0.1mL/h).
Simulated operating conditions for marine mechanical seals: The test medium is natural seawater or artificial seawater, of which the content of mud and sand is not less than 30mg/L, and the content of mud and sand particles less than 0.3um in diameter is not less than one-third. The type operation test is divided into the operation test under the conditions of pressure change, pressure cycle, anti-vibration and shock (see the relevant standards for details).
