Failure analysis of mechanical seal: the seal leaks a lot, and the bearing table is worn off

08/08/2022
fault phenomenon
In the mechanical seal design, the height of the bearing table of the graphite ring is generally 2 to 3 mm, and the service life is generally 800 to 1000 hours. However, sometimes the bearing table is completely ground before the service life ends. In this case, the spring force is reduced, and the specific pressures of the end faces  are  reduced and leakage of the mechanical seal increases.

Cause Analysis
1. The medium of the mechanical seal has poor lubricity (such as butene, etc.), the medium contains particles, high temperature carbon deposits, and the process changes greatly, such as pressure changes, flow changes, temperature changes, etc.
2. The graphite whose quality is poor, whose texture is rough, is not wear-resistant.
3. Unbalanced mechanical seal has no flushing and cooling system.

Solution
1.Select wear-resistant graphite ring material or use balanced mechanical seal in design.

2.Select the appropriate flushing scheme to reduce particle wear and improve the working environment. Options 31, 32, and 41 of API 682 "Mechanical Seals" can be selected, of which the 31 scheme is a forward flushing scheme with a hydrocyclone, which is suitable for fluids containing solid heavy particles, taking away frictional heat on the end faces of the said mechanical seal and removing solids particles. Plan 32 is an injection flushing plan, suitable for media containing solid particles, or fluids that are prone to cavitation and evacuation. Scheme 41 is a forward flushing scheme with heat exchanger and hydrocyclone, suitable for fluids containing solid heavy particles.

3.For the mechanical seal containing granular media, whose friction pair can be made of hard-to-hard materials, such as cemented carbide and cemented carbide, cemented carbide and silicon carbide.
