The material selection of cartridge mechanical seal types should comprehensively consider the working environment (temperature, pressure, medium) and component functions, with core requirements including mechanical properties, temperature resistance, medium compatibility, wear resistance, etc. Its main materials include dynamic/static ring materials (such as silicon carbide, hard alloy) and auxiliary sealing materials (such as rubber, metal), with different material requirements for different components.
2. Material requirements for key components
Dynamic and static ring materials
Core material types: mainly composed of silicon carbide, hard alloy, and ceramics. Among them, silicon carbide is widely used in cartridge mechanical seal types due to its excellent high temperature resistance, wear resistance, and chemical stability.
Performance requirements: It should meet the requirements of high temperature resistance (such as sealing up to -40 ℃~400 ℃ for Series 2), high pressure (≤ 4.2MPa), medium corrosion resistance, as well as low friction coefficient and high wear resistance.
Auxiliary sealing materials (such as O-rings, sealing rings)
Rubber material: Select according to the characteristics of the medium, common types and requirements are as follows:
Nitrile rubber: with outstanding oil resistance, suitable for fuel oil and lubricating oil media, but not resistant to ketones and esters.
Fluororubber: resistant to high temperatures (200~250 ℃) and strong corrosive media, suitable for high-risk working conditions such as chemical and petroleum industries.
Silicone rubber: resistant to high and low temperatures (-70~260 ℃), ozone aging, suitable for high temperature or strong light source environments.
EPDM rubber: resistant to steam, acid and alkali, can be used in water systems or steam media.
General requirements: Suitable elasticity, low compression deformation, aging resistance, and no swelling, hardening, or decomposition with the working medium are required.
Metal components (such as shaft sleeves, covers)
Material selection: Commonly used 316L stainless steel, 2205 duplex steel, etc., must meet the requirements of corrosion resistance (especially containing impurities or acidic and alkaline media) and mechanical strength. For example, LB40-250 seals use 316L or 2507 materials to deal with complex media such as gypsum slurry.
Processing requirements: The surface should be smooth to reduce friction loss, and it should maintain vertical accuracy with the sealing surface to ensure no radial runout (≤ 0.04mm) after installation.
3. Core criteria for material selection
1). Adaptability to working conditions: According to API 682 standard, the materials of different series of seals need to match the temperature and pressure range. For example, Series 3 seals need to pass strict medium certification tests.
2). Media compatibility: Avoid chemical reactions between materials and media. For media containing particles, use high hardness and wear-resistant materials (such as silicon carbide), and for acidic media, use acid resistant rubber (such as fluororubber).
3). Installation and economy: The material should be easy to process and shape, with controllable costs, while ensuring no damage during assembly (such as prohibiting tapping the sealing end face).
