Mechanical seal failure analysis: seal leakage, graphite ring inner edge is worn, outer edge is damaged

Fault phenomenon
The inner edge or outer edge of the graphite ring has notched wear, the end face has obvious wear marks, and the mechanical seal leaks.

Cause Analysis
In the quenching type flushing, the cooling water will scale after encountering high temperature, and the inner edge of the graphite ring will be worn away, and the rotary face of the mechanical seal will be blocked at the same time, causing the inner edge of the graphite ring to wear. The flushing amount is too large, the flushing hole is facing the graphite ring, the graphite ring is eroded, and the outer edge is notched.

Solution
1. To improve water quality, it is best to use demineralized water or low-pressure steam.
2. Change the sealing structure. The use of bellows mechanical seal  can effectively prevent the wear of the inner edge of the graphite ring. If the temperature of the medium is too high, effective cooling measures should be taken to prevent the cooling water from blocking the peaks and valleys of the bellows.
