Mechanical seal failure analysis: seal leakage, friction marks are larger than the width of the end face

30/08/2022
Fault phenomenon
The contact surface of the rotary face is wider than the width of the end face of the stationary seat. When the shaft is static, the mechanical seal does not leak, but the mechanical seal leaks when it rotates.

Cause Analysis
1.When the pump is running, the vibration is too large, which causes radial and axial vibration during the operation of the rotary face, and the thickness of the liquid film changes greatly. Sometimes the sealing surface is pushed away, resulting in increased leakage of the mechanical seal.
2.The narrower ring and the shaft are not concentric, and the gap of the gland mouth is too large, which sinks due to its own weight.
3. The bearing is damaged or the clearance is too large, and the coaxiality is offset.
4.The pipeline is deformed, causing the extrusion force to deform the pump, changing the coaxiality and verticality of the pump, and the verticality and coaxiality of the sealing gland branch and the shaft will be offset.
5.The shaft is bent.

Solution
1. Check the matching accuracy of the sealing gland branch. The clearance fit between the gland branch and the inner wall of the sealing cavity is generally not less than H7/g6. The thickness of the gasket between the mechanical seal gland and the sealing cavity is generally 1 to 3 mm.
2. Check the straightness of the shaft, the allowable bending value of the shaft: not more than 0.10mm when the speed is not more than 1800r/min; not more than 0.08mm when the speed is more than 3000r/min.
3. Use a dial gauge to measure the deformation before connecting the pipeline, and then connect the pipeline.
