Mechanical seal failure analysis: non-metallic rings are chemically corroded, causing seal leakage

Fault phenomenon:
The graphite ring is corroded in contact with the medium, causing the overall material of the graphite ring to change, resulting in pits, softening and disintegration, resulting in leakage of the mechanical seal.

Cause Analysis:
1.Strong acid or high concentration of alkali will cause the overall corrosion of the graphite ring. In this case, the mechanical seal will continue to leak whether it is static or running.
2.For resin impregnated carbon graphite  ring, when the end face is overheated and the temperature is higher than 180°C, the impregnated resin will be precipitated, which will reduce the wear resistance, or the resin impregnation depth is not enough. When the impregnated layer is removed, the wear resistance of the graphite ring will decrease .
3.The graphite ring is incompatible with the medium.

Solutions:
1. Replace the material and determine the material according to the medium conditions of the mechanical seal.
2. Establish a sealed cooling system to reduce the working temperature of the graphite ring.
3. Select corrosion-resistant impregnated resin, and use high-pressure impregnation to increase the impregnation depth of the graphite ring.
