What is flexible graphite material

Flexible graphite, also known as expanded graphite, comes from natural flake graphite afer  impurities are removed, and graphite oxide after being treated with strong oxidizing mixed acid. Graphite oxide is heated to release carbon dioxide, and its volume expands rapidly, becoming flexible graphite with loose texture, softness and toughness.The deep-processed flexible graphite is a very excellent sealing material for mechanical seals and so on. It can be made into various graphite gaskets since with such main characteristics as:

1.Excellent heat resistance and cold resistance,which makes it very suitable in becoming  mechanical seal spare parts. Flexible graphite has almost no change in physical properties though being in from ultra-low temperature of -270 degrees to high temperature of 3650 degrees (in non-oxidizing gas), and can also be used in air with temperature as high as about 600 degrees;

2. Excellent chemical resistance,which makes it very suitable in becoming mechanical seal spare parts. In addition to corrosion in strong oxidizing media such as nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, flexible graphite has almost no corrosion in other acids, alkalis and solvents;

3.Good self-lubricating property. Like natural graphite, flexible graphite is easy to slide under the action of external force, so it has lubricity, good wear reduction and small friction coefficient,which is a necessary property in becoming mechanical seal spare parts;

4. High rebound rate. When the shaft or bushing of the mechanical seal equipment has radial circular runout due to eccentricity in manufacturing and installation, the flexible graphite has sufficient floating performance. Even if the graphite has cracks, it can be well sealed, so as to ensure tight fit and prevent leakage.
