What are the characteristics of light hydrocarbon pump seals

03/08/2023
Light hydrocarbon is a general term for low molecular hydrocarbons. This kind of medium is in gaseous state at normal temperature and pressure, and can exist in liquid state at a certain temperature (critical temperature) after pressurization (above the critical pressure). Even at above the critical pressure, so long as the temperature is higher than the critical temperature it will still vaporize. The medium conveyed in the pump is all in liquid state. In the gap of the sealing end faces of the mechanical seal, the pressure gradually drops and the temperature gradually rises. Therefore, it will vaporize in the sealing end faces of the mechanical seal, that is to say, there are two phases of gas and liquid in the sealing end faces of the mechanical seal.
At the outer radius of the sealing end face, the pressure is equal to the medium pressure in the sealing cavity of the mechanical seal. As the radius decreases, the pressure gradually decreases after the medium enters the sealing end faces. Between the outer radius and the radius, the liquid film pressure is linearly distributed. As for the temperature of each point in the sealing gap of the mechanical seal, due to frictional heat, the overflow degree gradually increases after the medium has entered the sealing end faces, and the temperature is the highest when reaching the radius. Since the temperature has reached the critical temperature of the medium, and the pressure there has also dropped a lot, as a result, vaporization occurs at the radius, which is called the vaporization radius (also known as the boiling radius). The medium crosses the vaporization radius and continues to leak to the atmosphere side under the push of the pressure difference. The distance from the vaporization radius to the inner radius of the sealing end face is short, the pressure drops sharply, and the pressure distribution is parabolic, and when it reaches the inner radius, it is equal to the atmospheric pressure. The temperature shows a downward trend because the medium absorbs heat during vaporization. Due to the vaporization phenomenon in the sealing end face, there are two phases of vapor and liquid on the sealing end face of the mechanical seal of the light hydrocarbon pump. However, the vaporization radius is easily changed due to the influence of various factors, which makes the sealing work of the mechanical seal of the light hydrocarbon pump unstable and prone to failure.
