Mechanical seal end face temperature test technologies of non-contact type

12/04/2022
In recent years, great progress has been made in the research on temperature characteristics of friction end faces of mechanical seals. At present, the end face temperature test technologies can be divided into two categories contact type and non-contact type.

Mechanical seal end face temperature test technologies of non-contact type mainly includes infrared thermometry and acoustic thermometry.

Infrared thermometry is a method of measuring the temperature using infrared spectroscopy. The method can realize continuous and real-time measurement without disturbing the measured temperature field. Infrared temperature measurement can easily measure the surface temperature of moving objects, and can solve the problem of surface temperature measurement of high-speed rotating parts.

However, due to many factors such as surface emissivity, surrounding environment and so on, its temperature measurement accuracy is usually lower than that of thermocouples. In addition, thermal imaging cameras are expensive and it is difficult to popularize them.

The basic principle of the acoustic wave detection method is to collect the acoustic waves generated by the friction of the sealing faces of the mechanical seals and process them accordingly to obtain contact information of the sealing faces.Acoustic waves have advantages such as non-invasiveness and faster response time. Over the past few decades, acoustic thermometry has gradually evolved into a new temperature measurement technology in environments where conventional means such as thermocouples cannot meet the requirements. It is a very meaningful direction in studies of the end face temperature measurements of mechanical seals in the future. Besides, how to distinguish the source of acoustic information is an important task in the future research on acoustic thermometry.
