Analysis of flushing schemes of double mechanical seals (depending on their layouts)

12/07/2022
According to relevant regulations, there are mainly two types of layouts of double mechanical seals. This article introduces the first type.

The first type of mechanical seal combination is mostly series non-pressurized type, which includes non-pressurized buffer double-contact wet seal 2CW-CW; Non-pressurized tandem double seal 2CW-CS with outer contact dry running seal and inner contact wet seal and with buffer Gas; Slightly different from 2CW-CS, non-pressurized tandem double seal 2NC-CS which is with buffer gas has such features:the outside is the same as the 2CW-CS, while the inside is a non-contact seal.

According to the characteristics of this type , a flushing scheme with a buffered contact wet seal in it should be selected. This flushing scheme will be suitable for the conditions where leakage to the atmosphere side is not allowed. This flushing system should be composed of a buffer tank, a mechanical seal and its connecting pipeline, etc. The buffer tank should also be reasonably equipped with high and low liquid level switches, pressure switches and pressure gauges, which play an important role in monitoring the operation of the flushing system.

This flushing scheme should work as follows: install buffer in the buffer tank (buffer pressure < pumping medium pressure), and ensure the normal operation of the circulation through the pumping ring and other equipment inside the mechanical seal; the outlet of the buffer tank needs to be connected to the exhaust device so that the pressure of the buffer solution tends to be the same as the atmospheric pressure. If the inner seal fails, the medium will leak into the buffer solution. The high and low liquid level switches should alarm and switch in time when the set value is reached to avoid mixing or replacing the buffer liquid with the process fluid.
