Mechanical seal failure analysis: seal leakage, uniform annular grooves appear on the graphite end face

Fault phenomenon
The stationary seat of the mechanical seal is severely worn, even cracked, and has severe wear in the range of 360°, and has disc-shaped grooves. At this time, the  mechanical seal is in a leaking state.

Cause Analysis
1. The working temperature of the medium is high, and the liquid films on the end faces of the mechanical seal are vaporized.
2. The end faces of the mechanical seal are overheated, and the performance of resin-impregnated graphite decreases.
3. The unbalanced mechanical seal has high PV value, and a large amount of frictional heat vaporizes the liquid films on the end faces.
4. The medium has poor lubricity (such as liquid hydrocarbons, hot water).
5. Evacuation and cavitation, causing dry friction or semi-dry friction of the seal.

Solution
1. Reduce the PV value.
2. Use demineralized water or low-pressure steam instead.
3. Check whether the cooling water flow is smooth before starting.
4. Evacuation and cavitation are process problems, which can only be solved through process adjustment.
