What is Life cycle cost of mechanical seal

19/11/2021
The concept of product life cycle cost was proposed and used by the US Department of Defense in the 1960s. They came to a conclusion: The basic idea of product development is to reduce the maintenance cost during the life cycle to the minimum. This concept also applies to mechanical seals.

The life cycle cost of a mechanical seal system usually includes the initial purchase cost, installation cost, operating cost (including energy consumption cost), maintenance and repair cost, shutdown and production loss cost due to seal failure,  disposal and environmental protection cost, discarding and recycling cost. Among them, the disposal and environmental protection cost is related to the sealed medium and its auxiliary system, because the environmental protection requirements of the mechanical seal to control the escape are related to the nature of the sealing fluid (such as specific gravity), the type of the sealed medium and the auxiliary system of the sealing device, as shown in Figure below.

Zone I:  For general-purpose single mechanical seal, tandem and non-pressurized double mechanical seal, oppositely arranged and pressurized double mechanical seal, the medium specific gravity is above 0.4.

Zone II:Non-pressurized double mechanical seals, pressurized and tandem double mechanical seals arranged oppositely, with the medium specific gravity above 0.5-0.7.

Zone III: The pressured double mechanical seals arranged oppositely, the non-pressurized and tandem double mechanical seals and the leakage discharge liquid to the closed discharge system, the medium specific gravity is above 0.4.
