Shu (veritable technologies) and dao (Fundamental laws)of mechanical seals

From October 4th to 11th, the 2021 Nobel Prizes have been announced one after another. As the most prestigious international award, Nobel's concerns have prompted us to turn our eyes to basic sciences that seem to have little relationship with our daily lives, but actually affect human history to the deepest and even determine the future destiny of mankind.

Take the mechanical seal industry as an example. Things that are often used like mechanical seals in real life seem to be merely related to specific technologies like LIGA. They belong to the field of application and are veritable "shu(technologies)". However, the "dao(Fundamental principles and laws)" that supports its vigorous development lies precisely in basic science. Shu and Dao are just like root and stem that are both important.

Taking fluid sealing in sealing science as an example, it involves many disciplines such as fluid mechanics which belongs to the category of classical mechanics.

Speaking of mechanical seals, let us turn our attention the basic research:

(1)Sealing materials: focus will be on the essential relationship and coordination between the properties of low friction, high wear resistance and low/zero leakage rate of the mechanical seals under different operating conditions and different sealing medium conditions from the molecular level; focus will also be on the influence of the micro-assembly of materials,manufacturing process and surface treatment process on sealing performance of mechanical seals.

(2)Sealing structure: focus will be on the nature of the seal failures across scales, and using modern numerical simulation and test results to guide the structural design to achieve high stability, high reliability, strong followability and excellent sealing performance of mechanical seals.

The basic research of mechanical seals has a long way to go. We are still called to forge ahead.
