How to select mechanical seals for high temperature media

08/03/2022
In selection of mechanical seals, high-temperature media such as tower bottom hot oil, heat carrier, oil slurry, dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), dissolved salt, and molten sulfur have their own specific standards.

This is determined by the characteristics of these media. The characteristics of high temperature media are: as temperature increases, wear and corrosion of the mechanical seal are accelerated, and the material strength decreases.Medium is easy to vaporize, sealing ring is easy to deform, rubber is easy to carbonized, and matched ring is easy to loose.

These characteristics determine the requirements and selection criteria for mechanical seals as follows: 1. The sealing material must undergo stable heat treatment to eliminate residual stress and have a similar expansion coefficient.

2.If single mechanical seal is adopted, while width of end faces should be as small as possible, and end faces need to be fully cooled and flushed.

3.When temperature exceeds 250℃, metal bellow mechanical seal is adopted.

4.If double mechanical seal is adopted, external circulating fluid should be supplied. In order to prevent the auxiliary sealing ring from being short-lived, a cooling jacket should be provided for the auxiliary sealing ring on the side in contact with the medium.
