Flatness detection of mechanical seal friction pair

15/12/2022
The accuracy detection of the mechanical seal friction pair before installation is very important to improve the installation accuracy and quality pass rate of the mechanical seal. Because it is also a part of comprehensive quality management, it can digitize the quality of seals, pave the way for the work of fitters, and can also be used as a basis for evaluating the quality of parts.

The requirements for flatness testing are as follows: the flatness of the end face of the mechanical seal is not greater than 0.0009mm, and the surface must be smooth. Depending on the material, the surface roughness (Ra) requirements are different:
Carbide 0.01um
Hard carbon 0.3um
Silicon carbide 0.05um
Alumina 0.05um
Special copper 0.2um

The reason why such a high flatness is required is to ensure that the leakage of the end face of the mechanical seal is within the allowable range. In addition, reducing the roughness of the surface can increase the cross-sectional area, thereby increasing the load-carrying capacity and sealing performance of the mechanical seal.

The detection of the flatness of mechanical seals is usually measured by the interference effect of light waves. Measurements can be made with very good quality optical interferometers or optical flats. The former is a non-contact method, and the latter is a contact method. Enterprises commonly use the optical flat crystal detection method.
