Case Analysis of Mechanical Seal Failures

Case Analysis of Failures are quite meaningful in troubleshooting of mechanical seals.Below are three cases among them.

Case 1 Waste liquid pump (bit number P06413, medium analytical waste liquid, temperature about 70 ℃, usually 2 open and 2 standby)

During the operation of the pump, some components of the medium which was multi-component mixed liquids were often vaporized at high temperature, resulting in frequent cavitation and increased pump vibration as well as high noise.

According to statistics, the mechanical seal of the pump was replaced every 4 months on average. When the mechanical seal was disassembled and inspected, it was found that the sealing surface was flaky before falling off and the stationary seat was damaged.

Case 2 Reflux pump (bit number P06412, medium 30-40% methylamine solution, temperature 50-60 ℃, usually 2 open and 2 standby)

In just 67 days from April 11 to June 17, 2011, the mechanical seals were frequently (7 times)replaced, which had a certain impact on production. 

Every time the mechanical seal was disassembled and inspected after leakage occurs, it was found that the rotary face and stationary seat of the mechanical seal and the compensation spring were all intact, while the sealing rings of the friction pair were seriously aged and lost their elasticity.Then, through the analysis after reviewing the inspection record report, it was found that before each mechanical seal ’s failure, the liquid level at the pump inlet was too low, and the pump was evacuated in a short period of time.

Case 3 Circulating water pump for high pressure scrubber (bit number P06402, medium ordinary tempering water, temperature about 130℃) and low-pressure condenser circulating water pump (bit number P06403, medium ordinary tempering water, temperature about 130℃)

The mechanical seal leakage generally occured during the pump shift process. After the mechanical seal was disassembled,it was found that the sealing surfaces of the rotary face and stationary seat were intact, but the spring was jammed, and there were  many pits in the shaft sleeve.

After the pump shaft sleeve material was changed from carbon steel to 304 stainless steel and its surface was hardened, the leakage of mechanical seal during the pump shift process was significantly reduced.
